I'd seen this and meant to say something earlier but this is so cool -- I love the name and the headers. The points you've made about the stylization of it are things I've wondered about making a blog in the past, and it's awesome to be told that it can be done and then SHOWN how it's done :star: :heart: :blush:

ALSO I JUST STARTED POKEMON EMERALD ON A WHIM AND I AM UPSET AT THE RANDOM NUMBER GENERATOR THAT DETERMINES THE FUTURE OF MY BELOVED WURMPLE :vein: :pale2:

Wurmple, break free of the bonds of the random number generator. Go forth and forge your own destiny. Fulfill your dreams and become what you truly desire to become!

@dubiousdisc and I have been pondering about genericizing the code behind Staircase Spirit and making it available so that you all could see what we are doing and use what we have learned to make your own blogs to scream along with us. :D

Allow us to clean some things up first, add more comments, and maybe finish implementing tags. ^^;

Heyy @dubiousdisc and @ritabuuk

I don't comment on the boards as often as I'd like, but I do visit Staircase Spirit pretty religiously lately to check for new articles. I think you guys have something really cool going on pretty much every way you look at it. The blog's design is simple and still breathtaking, I was really amazed and curious about how you guys style each page according to its article's subject. It's a super nice touch that shows just how much thought you guys put into every new article. :heart:

You also write really really well, I'm super jealous. One reason why I take 20 years to get anything up online is because I'm always worried and embarrassed of my writing. But I love reading your articles -- I even read the one about Skies of Arcadia despite having absolutely no previous knowledge of the game, and I still found the writing really engaging. I also had a great time reading the latest article, about the Lugia movie, because I remember watching it when I was a kid and thinking it was oh-so-amazing, without even realizing the mixed messages it carries :pale2: And the one about money, I found myself agreeing with every paragraph. Nowadays my stance on money in videogames is this: don't ever use it. It's a bit of a personal challenge mixed in with "I don't have time to be going through these shopping menus", but I also kinda like going through dungeons knowing full well that I'm seriously neglecting my party's equipment. It kind of makes me feel like "heck yeah, my weapons are busted, but my party's so strong I can still keep going". Of course, that only lasts until I get my ass handed to me, which always eventually happens. Still, I'd rather spend money on recovery items or inn fees or the cool but overpriced item that becomes useless super quick (like the special outfits in Persona 3 FES/Portable).

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you to keep up the cool work, and that I'm gonna keep checking Staircase Spirit often :star: :heh:

@high seraph omfg you're too nice help

BUT
PLEASE!
Don't be embarrassed by your writing! Everything I've ever read of yours is fucking amazing and what are you talking about?!

There is one thing that has been helping me to not think like that with this entire project and it is the fact that it's collaborative. When I write on my own, I'm also super down on myself and even when I'm happy with how something came out, there's always the shadow of BUT WHAT IF IT SUCKS AND I CAN'T TELL BECAUSE I SUCK. But with this, I can't think that, because we both wrote the article and I'd never think that of something that Denise wrote, so I can just be happy with how it came out and shut the fuck up. I wish I could think like that all the time, but >_>

Another thing that helps is that these articles are not really things that we sit down and really decide to write - they are spawned by conversations we're having where at some point we go, "why don't we write these points down". We take some really loose notes without any concern for writing good or anything like that, without any regard for typos or mismatched tenses or anything, and only later we refine them into the finished articles. But I think starting from the position of just taking shitty notes really helps. In the past, when I had to write anything for a fansite, it would be an endeavor of wanting the first draft to already be beautiful and shining and all coherent, and throwing that away has really helped in actually getting things done - and the final results end up being more lively and honest anyway. Maybe this approach will help you too. :D

HAHAHA YOU HAVE BEEN FREED FROM THE SHACKLES OF CAPITALISM
It's a matter of picking your poison: choosing not to upgrade and then dying miserably but proudly, or upgrading only to find the better weapon in a chest three seconds after the purchase and feeling terrible? XD

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR WONDERFUL COMMENT ;___;

Today we wrote an article about, um, loading. Spurred by Windows 10 updating for three million years.

THIS IS GREAT AND THE TERMINOLOGY IS SPOT ON (spinny spinny and bullshit bar = perfect)

and YES PROPER LOADING BARS

WHAT DO WE WANT? LOADING BARS!

WHEN DO WE WANT 'EM? NOW (not in "a while" or "several minutes"!)

ROBIN THAT MADE ME LAUGH VERY LOUD

Now we have two more articles!
So!

One is our review of Eternal Sonata. This is a 20k-word essay about the entire game, making it pretty much a decently-sized fansite... except it's... um, well, yeah, not a fansite at all. We don't have many kind words about this game.

Another is, unbelievably, about what we like to call The Football Manager Steam Ad Saga. This will make more (or less?) sense when you read it, I guess.

Old news but, our thoughts on The Sims: Bustin' Out

...now the handheld Sims are our newest fandom and we're really into them... we're writing more articles about the sequels and a full-blown fansite for a character (you can easily guess who from the article). We have drawn fanart... bye we're gone

(In all seriousness though, we hadn't played something so satisfying in a long while. They're good games with amazing writing.)

On a related topic, we're working towards making the system upon which Staircase Spirit functions free to use for your own blog.

Excuse me if I ramble a moment, but let me give a rough explanation of what this system is designed to do:
  • It's made for people who are comfortable with formatting pages in Notepad++ and prefer to do so, rather than using in-site interfaces.
  • Since you have full control over the formatting of each individual page, functionality can be extended as needed without having to mess with complicated templates. You just put your own classes and ids as needed, you add your own code to the page, and you're set. If you need one bonus CSS rule for one single page, you can put the CSS directly in that page, and it will only load there, and it won't affect the rest of the site.
  • There is a site-wide template, but templates can be edited or completely changed on a page to page basis.
  • The system is absurdly light. Right now, the basic stuff has a size of 50 kbs. Yes, kilobytes! And it doesn't require any databases.
  • While there is all this manual control, the system automates things like filling in the index page with your articles, letting you automatically navigate between them, and so on (upcoming feature: an automated tag page). You can, however, always take manual control over any of these things with a little PHP knowledge.
  • The system can be extended with plugins and so on. Right now, ours is extended with Disqus to add comments to pages, and with the thingy that lets you put in your email to receive updates.
We're unleashing this to the world no matter what, since, hey, we've built it because we couldn't find anything like it around, so it could be useful to someone else somewhere. But I'd be interested to know, would anyone here consider using it?
