WordPress Multisite Help

Post by nyxmidnight »

I have a problem with my brand spankin' new install of WordPress Multisite. As you can see here, the main site is working. I have setup the network as well and tweaked the settings to my liking. I installed it to work with subdomains.

However, when I try to create my second site in the network, I get the dreaded 404 Not Found error. When I look at the "writing" folder via FTP, there is nothing inside. I don't understand what went wrong. Do I have to create the subdomain in my CPanel first? Am I supposed to populate the folder with WP files myself?

Help me Obi Wan Amassment, you're my only hope.

I have never done anything with WP Multisite, but in my searches I found the following articles which look like they have some concrete advice:

- WPMUdev.org thread (possibly this could be a htaccess file problem?)
- StackExchange thread (possibly a site ID tag problem?)
- ElegantThemes.com tutorial (may need a "virtual host" configured on each subdomain? idk what that even means but ok lol)

I hope this helps! I'm sorry I can't give you experience based help O.o

Thank you very much, @Robin! I ended up back into the Codex after changing file permissions didn't help and I spotted this tiny thing:
In some cases you might also have to add Options FollowSymlinks at the start of the file.

https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network
Lo and behold, after adding Options +FollowSymLinks to my root .htaccess it works.

I don't know either.

ETA: I KICKED MY ENTIRE SITE OFFLINE REALLY

Okay it seems that even thought I got WP Multisite to work in theory, in practise every time I try using it my host bans my IP from their server (most likely for using way too much CPU?), so looks like I'll have to manage a bunch of installs. Probably with something like InfiniteWP or something.

Have you already tried to get in touch with your host to find out the exact reason why your IP gets banned? I have about 15+ sites on my Multisite WP and I'm using a basic shared hosting package.
