Gifs aren't so bad as long as the site isn't completely filled with them or are used for banner/backgrounds. I find that way too distracting. I use them on my site but only for avatar purposes.
There are shadows before us - but only because the light is at our back.

Yeah, I like the way GIFs are used now more as a storytelling device/decoration, rather than the "HEY IT MOVES SO IT'S AUTOMATICALLY COOL TO USE EVERYWHERE" approach. ^_^

Yeah exactly! A little added flare from animated gifs is awesome.

I miss them too! So much that I found a jQuery plugin for them. I might have to make a layout with fancy scrollbars. Altering the scrollbar CSS is the only thing I like[d] about IE.

Same here, I don't know why other browsers haven't found options to do this. If IE could do it, it can't be that hard.
